HARTING – A strong commitment to standards

Gerd Weking is the specialist in international standardization at HARTING.

Gerd Weking, Central Division Head of Protection Rights and International Standardization at the HARTING Technology Group, has been elected chairman of a joint ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and IEC committee after being nominated by the German Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

His unanimous election was recognition of his international cooperation work, and has secured a key position in standardization for Germany. ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 25 deals with electrical connections for information technology. Its work focuses on future-oriented issues such as the “intelligent home” for private households and cabling for business premises to provide even faster data connections.

At HARTING, Gerd Weking is responsible for standards and patent and trademark law as well as development services, such as computer simulation, documentation and standardization. As a physical technology engineer, he has supported and contributed to advancement in technological development at HARTING for 30 years. Gerd Weking joined the company as a laboratory engineer in 1979, and became laboratory manager and subsequently development manager for printed board connectors. In 1994, he headed the former Electronics and Printed Board Connectors Division. Mobile communications was developing worldwide during this period, and Gerd Weking and his team established new business relationships with leading telecommunications companies by developing new technical solutions.

In the 1990s, Gerd Weking began working in German standards working groups in order to contribute his experience of German and international standardization. Standardization has been his main responsibility since 2000. In the following, he was active as the German representative on the IEC’s Technical Committee TC 48 for connectors and structures for electronic equipment. In 2003, he was elected chairman of the TC 48 for 6 years, and was reelected for a further 3 years in March. Gerd Weking’s reward for his commitment goes beyond his reelection. The German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (DKE) will recognize Gerd Weking’s great personal commitment by presenting him with the “DKE – Nadel” award at the end of April.

Standardization is an extremely important issue for the HARTING Technology Group. Dietmar Harting, in particular, is highly involved in standardization as the President of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and President of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).
